Marvel Secret Wars (1984): The Battle That Changed Marvel Forever

Before the MCU's multiverse era, Marvel Comics brought its biggest heroes and villains together for one massive battle on Battleworld.

Marvel Secret Wars (1984): The Battle That Changed Marvel Forever

Marvel Comics had long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned superhero crossovers into huge blockbuster events produced one of the largest ever superhero gatherings. The story in question was Secret Wars, which came out in 1984.
The series, which consisted of 12 issues, gathered some of Marvel's best-known heroes and villains on a mysterious planet named Battleworld, and at the heart of the conflict was the powerful cosmic entity known as the Beyonder, whose unusual experiment had a significant impact on the lives of a number of Marvel characters.

Welcome to Battleworld

The story starts when the Beyonder becomes fascinated by the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe. He brings them to Battleworld, a planet which has been created specifically for their conflict. They are told by the heroes that they have to fight the villains, with the understanding that the winners will have their greatest wishes granted. The heroes include Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops and Mister Fantastic. Their enemies are Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Galactus and a number of other powerful villains.

Doctor Doom's Bigger Plan

While all the other characters are concerned with surviving Battleworld, Doctor Doom has a much larger objective in view. Doom comes to the realization that the Beyonder has a power that is almost beyond imagination. Rather than just aiming at defeating the heroes, Doom starts searching for a way to get the Beyonder's power for himself. His ambition eventually turns out to be one of the most important elements of the whole story.

Spider-Man Gets the Black Suit

A well-known moment in Secret Wars is that of Spider-Man. While the story is going on, Peter Parker comes across a strange black substance which then becomes his new costume. The suit seems to be of great use since it is capable of altering its shape, reacting to Spider-Man's thoughts and giving him new abilities. However, there's a problem. It is in fact not a normal costume. The black suit is a symbiote from another planet. When Spider-Man comes back to Earth he finds that the creature has its own consciousness and wants to stay bonded with him. The symbiote would later be known as Venom, which made the events of Secret Wars a significant part in the history of Spider-Man.

The Beyonder

At the center of Secret Wars is the Beyonder, the mysterious being responsible for bringing the heroes and villains to Battleworld.

His power is far beyond anything the characters gathered on the planet can comprehend, but he does not behave like a conventional villain. Rather than simply trying to defeat the heroes, the Beyonder observes them. He becomes fascinated by human desire, conflict, ambition and the way people react when they are given almost limitless power.

That perspective gives Secret Wars a scale beyond a simple superhero battle. The characters are not just fighting each other. They are being watched by a being powerful enough to reshape their entire reality, yet curious enough to study what makes them human.

Why Secret Wars Still Matters

Secret Wars helped establish the idea that Marvel could bring characters from different corners of its universe together in one enormous crossover and make the event feel like something bigger than any individual character's story.

Its influence continued long after the original 12 issues ended.

Spider-Man's black costume became one of the most recognizable developments in his history. Doctor Doom received a story that pushed his obsession with power to one of its most memorable extremes. Battleworld also became an important part of Marvel's wider mythology, eventually returning in later stories.

More importantly, Secret Wars demonstrated just how interconnected the Marvel Universe could become when its heroes, villains and different corners of its mythology were placed in the same story.

Secret Wars 1984 and Secret Wars 2015

Marvel eventually returned to the Secret Wars name with another major event in 2015.

The two stories share some obvious similarities. Both involve Battleworld and Doctor Doom, but they approach the idea very differently.

The 2015 event is built around the collapse of the Marvel multiverse. Doctor Doom takes advantage of that destruction and creates his own version of Battleworld, effectively turning the remnants of reality into a world under his control.

Because of that, the 2015 Secret Wars is much more deeply connected to Marvel's modern multiverse mythology. The original story was primarily about bringing Marvel's characters together, while the later event used the concept to explore what happens when the entire multiverse begins to fall apart.

The MCU Connection

Secret Wars has gained even more attention because Marvel Studios is bringing Avengers: Secret Wars to the MCU.

That does not necessarily mean the film will directly recreate the 1984 comic. Marvel Studios has repeatedly taken elements from multiple comic stories and combined them when adapting major events for the screen.

The movie could therefore draw from both versions of Secret Wars. The original provides the foundation of heroes and villains being brought together on Battleworld, while the 2015 event offers a much closer connection to the multiverse and Doctor Doom's role in reshaping reality.

How much the film borrows from either story remains to be seen, but the two comics give Marvel Studios plenty of material to work with.

A Comic That Helped Define Marvel

Secret Wars was more than another superhero crossover.

It brought Marvel's biggest heroes and villains together, introduced Spider-Man's iconic black symbiote costume, gave Doctor Doom one of his defining stories and established Battleworld as a concept Marvel could continue returning to decades later.

Its influence can still be felt throughout Marvel Comics.

Long before the MCU began building toward massive crossover films, Marvel Comics had already experimented with the idea of putting an entire universe of characters into one enormous event and seeing what happened when all of their stories collided.

That is ultimately what made Secret Wars so important. It was not simply a story about who could defeat whom. It was an early demonstration of just how big the Marvel Universe could become.
